Shops face questions after ‘bypassing electricity meters’

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to emphasise that the origin of alleged electrical meter tampering has not yet been discovered.

Three Scunthorpe shops risk losing their licences after the licence holder allegedly by-passed the electrical meters.

This is illegal, and also causes a safety hazard to themselves and other shops.

North Lincolnshire Council has received an application to carry out a review into all three premises to see whether they have broken their licences.

Booze Master on Frodingham Road, Luxe Salon on Doncaster Road and Henderson Avenue Stores will face questions about the allegations.

It is understood that police discovered the alleged tampering of the meter, but it was not clear where this took place.

The licence holder or holders have not been publicly named.

The owners of businesses at Luxe Salon and Booze Master say their premises weren’t involved, and they are unsure why the review is taking place.

A notice has been published on the council website for each premises saying: “Take notice that an application has been made to North Lincolnshire Council on February 22 2022 for a review of a premises licence… on the grounds of: Prevention of Crime and Disorder and Public Safety.

“The Licence Holder has been found to be bypassing the electric meter in one of their licensed premises, which is a criminal offence and also a safety issue.”

Committee members could decide to strip them of their alcohol licences.

A date for the hearings has not been set yet.

Any interested parties can contact the council in writing at ‘Waste & Public Protection, Licensing Division, Church Square House, Scunthorpe’.

They have 28 days from the date the application for review began on February 22.
