The Chinese ambassador to Nicaragua, Chen Xi, arrived in Managua on Wednesday to reactivate bilateral cooperation, after Daniel Ortega's decision to reestablish diplomatic relations with Beijing and break them with Taiwan."It is a great honor and pleasure to be able to serve as the first ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Nicaragua after the reestablishment of our diplomatic relations," said the diplomat after arriving at the Managua international airport.Chen Xi considered the reopening of diplomatic ties as "a strategic and historic decision that not only promotes the friendship between China and Nicaragua, but also favors the cooperation of the two countries in international affairs."In China "we highly value the position held by the Nicaraguan government of (recognizing) only one China and that Taiwan is a province, an inalienable part of Chinese territory," he stressed. The diplomat was received by Laureano Ortega, son of the president and presidential adviser on trade, investment and international cooperation issues, official media reported.Chen Xi is a diplomat with a 36-year career, more than half of which, he said, worked in Latin America and the Caribbean. He was ambassador to Cuba until June 2021.Managua first established relations with Beijing in 1985, during the first Ortega government. But in 1990, the administration of former President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro severed ties with China and recognized Taiwan. When Ortega returned to power in 2007, he maintained ties with Taiwan, in exchange for millions in assistance. But he ended the relationship on December 9, 2021.The rapprochement with China "is the reestablishment of an old relationship that the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) has had with the Communist Party of the Republic of China," Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada explained during an interview on Tuesday with the Russian television station RT.“It is a very positive, very constructive, mutually beneficial and respectful relationship” that advances “in a very dynamic way”, he stressed.China reopened its embassy in Managua on December 31, 2021.The reestablishment of Managua-Beijing relations occurred at a time when the United States and the European Union intensified sanctions against the Ortega regime, who obtained a fourth consecutive term in November 2021, while his main rivals were imprisoned or exiled.(With information from AFP)
